In 2006 I did two exhibitions in Spain; the first one was in Santiago de Compostela at the Centro Galego de Arte Contemporanea, and the second was in Madrid at the Fundación Telefónica. For each one I made a different installation but in the centre of both I placed a replica of myself.
I began preparing for the replicas at the end of 2005 and in order to see the development of the work, I made some photographs of the models which I then used as a form of documentation once in the workshop. I quickly realised that I was standing in front of a work that was gaining autonomy, that was starting to transform itself.
It was, luckily, one of the biggest surprises that I have had in my whole career: this series appeared totally unexpectedly and I can almost be sure that it will stay permanently.
I wasn’t sure if it would be better to remake the photographs in my studio, under suitable conditions, or take the opportunity to use the images I made during the production of the replicas. In the end I chose the second option.
In 2007 I published a small sequence of images in the September issue of the Berlin magazine “Lettre International”. Afterwards, for different reasons, the work became more difficult and I abandoned the project for some time. In 2009 I returned to it and after all that, the series was called “Pinocchio”.
