Burt Barr
March 6 - April 2, 2003

American artist Burt Barr’s work is the antithesis of contemporary video. With its methodical pacing, its cinematic undertones, in looks and reference, the unusually long takes and seductive realm, bring to the screen pieces that are pictorially lush.

For this exhibition Barr will present 2 works: Running Time and Focus Trisha.

Running Time presents a woman running the mile on a desolate ocean road. Visually mesmerizing the piece is without a single edit, its runner deliberately heading towards the end. Beautifully framed and shot in colour, its visual appeal is offset by a methodical and mathematical precision, that of time ticking away on screen from 9 minutes to zero.

Focus Trisha, in black and white, shows a woman walking along a stretch of beach by the ocean’s edge. It’s soft focus shroud the piece in mystery. Shot from a distance, it’s most obvious aspect is the curving shoreline with waves and a white dot, growing larger, a woman making her way toward the viewer. Intentionally out of focus, the figure obscured by the hazy perception of what is actually taking place.

Burt Barr has received numerous grants and participated in museum exhibitions in the US and Europe; including the Whitney Museum of American Art in NYC, Museum Boymans in Rotterdam and the CAPC Musee in Bordeaux. He has also participated in the Toronto and Berlin Film Festivals. Barr has had solo exhibitions at the Whitney Museum (2001), the Reina Sofia in Madrid (2002) and Platform in Istanbul (2002).

He lives and works in New York City.
